Flu Season is Right Around the Corner

Now is the time to start thinking about your annual flu shot. Although flu season typically peaks during the colder months, September, October and early November are the prime time to receive the flu vaccine. Receiving the vaccine in these months will make the vaccine more effective during the height of the flu season, in February and March.
Vaccination not only reduces your risk of falling ill but also lowers the severity of symptoms if you do catch the virus, helping to keep hospitals from becoming overwhelmed. While anyone can catch the flu, certain groups face higher stakes: older adults, young children, pregnant individuals, and those with chronic health conditions or weakened immune systems. Healthcare workers are also in the line of fire simply due to constant exposure.

Flu shots are widely available at pharmacies as well as grocery store clinics, urgent care centers, and primary care offices. Many workplaces and community health events also offer them. If you have insurance, most plans—including Medicare—cover the vaccine at no cost.
The flu vaccine is an important preventative measure but don’t forget frequent handwashing and steering clear of close contact with sick individuals are also excellent preventatives for good health.
