Omicron is the latest Covid variant spreading across the country. According to the World Health Organization, the variant has been concerning since late November. We see the numbers of omicron cases rising and have learned it is a more contagious variant. But what else is there to know about Omicron?*
- It’s fast spreading. According to an article published by Houston Methodist the variant is more contagious than previous variants. In comparison to the Delta variant, Omicron surpassed 80% of the total Delta cases once discovered in Houston. Scientists are still trying to piece together why the latest variant is so contagious although it has been reported to have milder symptoms than its predecessors.
- Current treatments are less effective. Previous treatments seem to be less effective against the omicron variant. Sotrovimab, a monoclonal antibody therapy that has been working best against omicron is in short supply due to the rapid rise of cases.
- Stay safe, exercise precaution. The suggested precautions remain the same. Wear a mask, social distance, avoid crowds, and wash your hands. Even if you are vaccinated and boosted, you still can contract and spread the virus. Following protocol protects you, your loved ones, and the public.
