It is important to review your plan every year before open enrollment for possible changes with your choice of physician and prescription drug coverage. Open enrollment runs every year from November 1 to December 15 (though employer and Medicare plans’ open enrollment periods may vary). This is the time of year when you can choose to renew your health insurance – or not.
If you reviewed your plan renewal information and are satisfied, in most cases you do to need to do anything and your health insurance will renew automatically*.
This is also a good time to check for extra plan benefits. Plans often come with perks that can save you additional money and attain better health. Many plans offer 100% coverage for preventive care and annual exams or discounts on eyeglasses and corrective lenses. Some even include gym membership discounts, weight loss programs and options for quitting smoking.
If you decide to change your insurance plan or provider it is important to enroll in a new plan before open enrollment ends December 15th to avoid any gaps in coverage. If you wait too long, you could find yourself without health insurance coverage – and no easy way to get it.
To switch health insurance plans, you have choices:
- Speak with your existing health insurance company. They may have a different plan that would work for you.
- Review health insurance plans from different insurance companies.
- Check out https://www.healthcare.gov to view and compare health insurance options for your state.
- Call a broker. They are helpful and able to talk through your needs and plan options that will be right for you.
If you choose to switch health insurance plans, and to guarantee a smoother transition, contact all of your medical providers, including your dentist and eye care professionals.
