Nutrition and Eye Health

Proper nutrition is crucial for our body, but did you know there is a link between good nutrition and eye health? There is no substitute for the quality of life good vision offers. Adding certain nutrients to your daily diet will help preserve your vision and prevent visual impairment from problems we face as we age such as cataracts, aging macular degeneration (AMD), and believe it or not, dry eye.

Researchers have linked eye-friendly nutrients to reduce the risk of certain eye diseases. Eye health can be supported and maintained through a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Fruits and Vegetables

The nutrients in fruits and vegetables provide antioxidants, which can help maintain healthier eyes. Fruits and vegetables also provide protection because the nutrients in such foods provide antioxidants that our bodies cannot synthesize.

For example, lutein and zeaxanthin are important antioxidants that help prevent degeneration in the lens and retina. Eating a diet rich in these carotenoids helps reduce the risk of AMD by fighting oxidation in the cells of the eyes.

Foods rich in lutein and zeaxanthin are typically dark-colored fruits, green leafy vegetables, and other foods such as eggs.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Eating fatty fish, like salmon, tuna, mackerel, and sardines also helps lower the risk of AMD. People with dry eye syndrome can also benefit from a diet rich in Omega-3 Fatty acids. A diet rich in Omega-3 helps soothe inflammation in your eyelids or on the surface of your eye. It also helps glands in your eye make the oily part of your tears. You can also find omega-3 fatty acids in plant-based sources, such as nuts, seeds, and dark leafy greens.

If you plan to include eye vitamins in your daily regimen, make sure to discuss this with your doctor. Taking too many supplements can cause problems, especially if you are taking prescription medications.

Good nutrition is vital at all ages for your entire body and plays an important role in maintaining exceptional health. Make sure the food in your diet has a positive and protective effect on your health.
