School is out and summer is here! Many of us will find ourselves pool or beachside in the upcoming summer months. While outside, it’s important to remember your sunscreen! Don’t be shy. Slathering on sunscreen protects your skin from the damaging rays of the sun.
Here are some tips for ultimate sun protection:
Sunglasses
If you are shopping for sunglasses, don’t forget to check the UV rating before purchasing that perfect pair. Make sure the lenses are 100% UVA and UVB, or UV400 protected. Everyone, children and adults alike, will benefit from wearing proper eye protection in the sun. Even when it is cloudy, wear those sunnies. The sun’s rays can pass through haze and clouds.
Hats
A wide-brimmed hat is a best and most fashionable choice this summer. It adds extra protection and gives you a better defense against rays that may penetrate above or around your sunglasses. Look for a hat with an effective UV rating to get the most protection.
Avoid peak hours
If you are super sensitive to sunlight, you may be at higher risk for sun damage. When possible, avoid sun exposure between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm. This is the time of day when UV rays are more aggressive. Although it is impossible to avoid sunlight and peak hours every day, make sure you always wear eye protection and use sunblock.
Sun is good for you, but too much can cause harm to your skin. Although vitamin D is necessary for a healthy body, the sun is not the sole source of this nutrient. Some of the best sources of Vitamin D can be found in a variety of foods and supplements. If you prefer to get your vitamin D in the great outdoors, remember, a little sun will go a long way!
